# Connecticut Table of Authorities: Briefs and Appendices

> Connecticut appellate table requirements, official-first case citations, appendix distinctions and a PDF-to-Word review workflow.

*Updated: 2026-10-14*

**Connecticut Supreme Court and Appellate Court principal briefs require a table of authorities with brief-page references.** Practice Book §§ 67-4(c) and 67-5(c) supply the appellant and appellee requirements; § 67-11 governs citation forms. A party appendix is a different document component, with its own table of contents under § 67-8(b). Do not substitute an appendix contents list for the brief’s authorities table.

**Connecticut appellate fast facts**

- Appellant: § 67-4(c) requires authorities cited in the brief and the pages where their citations appear.
- Appellee: § 67-5(c) separately requires the same table; it is not optional simply because the appellant already supplied one.
- Sequence: §§ 67-4(i) and 67-5(j) place the table after the statement of issues and before the statement of facts, subject to the additional land-use statement specified for applicable appellant briefs.
- Table citations to state cases: official reporter first, if available, followed by the regional reporter, under § 67-11(a). Connecticut argument citations use the official reporter only under § 67-11(b).
- Electronic brief and party appendix share one pagination scheme starting with the cover: “Page X of XX,” under § 67-2A(c).
- These are appellate rules, not a universal requirement for Connecticut trial-court memoranda. Check current rules, filing guidance and case-specific orders; this guide is not legal advice.

## Read the table rule and the citation rule together

> “A table of authorities cited in the brief, with references to the page or pages of the brief where the citations to those authorities appear.” — Practice Book § 67-4(c)

> “In the table of authorities, citations to state cases shall be to the official reporter first, if available, followed by the regional reporter.” — Practice Book § 67-11(a)

Connecticut creates a practical extraction problem: the argument’s Connecticut citation can legitimately contain only the official reporter, while the table needs the regional citation too. An automatically extracted entry therefore needs a human citation check; do not assume the PDF contains every reporter component needed for the table. Section 67-11(a) also specifies the United States Reports first for U.S. Supreme Court opinions, with alternative reporters in its stated preference order when necessary. Section 67-11(c) requires identifying details for electronic-only cases, including the case name, docket number, database identifiers where applicable, court and full disposition date. Do not replace that complete entry with a shortened database citation from the argument.

**Brief versus appendix requirement matrix**

| Component | Governing provision | Practical treatment |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Appellant’s principal brief | § 67-4(c), (i) | List cited authorities and brief pages; place the table in the prescribed front-matter sequence. |
| Appellee’s principal brief | § 67-5(c), (j) | Build a table for this brief’s own citations and page references, not the appellant’s pages. |
| Reply brief | § 67-5A | The rule discusses reply format and excludes tables from length calculations; it does not repeat the principal-brief table mandate. Check applicable instructions and any order before omitting front matter. |
| Party appendix | § 67-8(a), (b) | Generally optional, except where a not-officially-published opinion is cited; if included, provide a table of contents at its beginning. |
| Electronic combined document | § 67-2A(a), (c) | Use one searchable document and continuous cover-through-appendix pagination; bookmarks and appendix citation hyperlinks require separate attention. |

## Prepare the table around Connecticut pagination

- **Export the complete draft.** Keep the cover, front matter and any party appendix in the electronic PDF. The total page count belongs to the entire combined document. The clerk’s January 2026 guidelines distinguish electronic filers under § 67-2A from exempt or excluded paper filers under § 67-2; do not mix their spacing and margin rules.
- **Open standard format and confirm settings.** Use the [Table of Authorities generator](/table-of-authorities-generator?court=generic#tool). Court detection or a loaded sample can change settings, so confirm the actual court, heading and page numbering before reviewing output.
- **Review authority identities.** Merge full and short forms only when they refer to the same authority. Check every footnote and *Id.* reference, add missed statutes and rules, and supply the required parallel reporter information. Alphabetical case organization is a useful editorial choice here; the quoted provisions should not be described as an express alphabetical mandate.
- **Verify printed brief pages.** Table references locate citations in the brief, not reporter pinpoints, transcript pages or appendix item pages. If a hypothetical citation appears on printed pages 14 and 18, its table references are 14, 18—not a reporter’s page 214 or an exhibit’s page 7.
- **Download and assemble.** PDF-only produces an editable Word table. With the matching Word brief and a text-layer PDF, insertion adds ordinary table text to the Word file. Check its placement after the statement of issues rather than adopting another state’s front-matter sequence.
- **Re-export and recheck.** Inserting the table changes both page positions and the total in “Page X of XX.” Recheck every reference after assembly and later edits. Add and verify required PDF bookmarks and appendix hyperlinks separately; the generator does not create them or format the entire brief.

> **Build the table, then review the Connecticut details:** Brief Authority produces a reviewable table from your PDF, free and without an account or document upload. Connecticut uses standard format. It does not restyle citations, add missing regional reporter research, or guarantee filing compliance. The DOCX-only route is different: it creates Word fields that Word for Windows must build and update.

## Frequently asked

**Does the appellee need a separate table?**

Yes. Section 67-5(c) requires the appellee’s authorities with the pages of that brief where citations appear. Copying the appellant’s table would introduce authorities or references that may not belong in your filing.

**Must the appendix have another authorities table?**

Section 67-8(b) requires an appendix table of contents. That indexes appendix items; it is not the table of authorities required in the principal brief. An included appendix also has formatting and pagination obligations.

**Why might a case need another reporter in the table?**

Section 67-11 distinguishes table citations from argument citations. State-case table entries use the official reporter first, if available, followed by the regional reporter; Connecticut argument citations use only the official reporter.

**Can I replace page lists with passim?**

The cited table rules require page references and do not expressly authorize passim. Use verified specific pages rather than treating silence as permission to suppress references.

**Is there a Connecticut preset?**

No. This link opens standard format. Review the heading, citation completeness and Connecticut’s continuous page scheme yourself, especially after insertion changes pagination.
